ABSTRACT

learning-pyramidEnhancing learners’ retention is one of the challenges that English teachers in Vietnam have to face, especially in teaching English at universities where the class schedule, assessment methods and learning conditions have completely different features. The study’s purpose is to find out the impact of using of self-evaluation worksheet and peer-teaching activity on increasing the students’ retention in learning English as well as to make the process of learning and teaching English at UEH more enjoyable and fruitful.

The methods of the study involved interviews with the teachers, self-evaluation worksheets, four vocabulary tests and questionnaires for the students. The interviews were conducted before the start of the last semester of the year. The worksheets were distributed at the end of each class.  The vocabulary tests were conducted in weeks one, six, eleven and thirteen of the last semester. And the questionnaires were delivered two weeks after the students finished the course.

The study results showed that conducting peer-teaching activity at the beginning of class and using self-evaluation worksheet at the end of it did help increase the students’ retention. Although there were certain constraints such as time and the teachers’ and students’ readiness and willingness, the effectiveness of this tool and activity proved that applying these would bring the students considerable and direct benefits, and at the same time offer the teaching staff at UEH interesting and positive experiences in their career.
